EFF finalises election lists for ‘endorsement’

The Economic Freedom Fighters, yesterday finalised the process of nominating party candidates for ward and proportional representation (PR) council positions.

Unlike other political parties, the EFF is now busy with preparations for its national listing conference to “endorse” candidates chosen by branches.

In the ANC, candidates are chosen by branches while PR councillors are drafted at regional list conferences, though the provincial list committee and provincial executive committee give the final go-ahead.

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, EFF national elections spokeswoman Veronica Mente said now that party branches had finished choosing their preferred candidates, the party would soon announce a date for the list conference.

“The list conference will be convened in about two weeks’ time. After that we will announce our candidates.

“This is a process of branches. We are unlike other parties. With us branches choose their own people and when the branches have forwarded the names, the national listing conference will endorse them,” Mente said.

She said now that the process of nominating and electing councillors had ended, the party’s national work committee would discuss a way forward.

“The listing conference is not about us giving new names. We do not have names as the national structure. The names are going to come from branches with their own IEC forms and we will work with the same list,” she said.

The DA convenes what it calls electoral colleges throughout its constituencies, where all members who apply for councillor candidacy are interviewed.

This is followed by selection panels interviewing the candidates again.

The selection panels conduct final interviews for rankings. If there are more candidates than vacancies, the number is reduced to fit the number of posts.

The PAC is still nominating councillor candidates across the province. Eastern Cape secretary Jerome Mdyolo said last week that the party was aiming to finish that process by end May.

The UDM held its provincial list conference at Khanyisa High School in Mthatha last week, where it was expected to consolidate its PR councillors’ list. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
