Inspectors picket over salary dispute

Labour inspectors will continue with lunchtime pickets at the East London office of the labour department until their demands are met.

The inspectors, who are aligned to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) is protesting against management’s failure to implement the same salary scale for all labour inspectors across the Eastern Cape.

Nehawu’s provincial secretary Miki Jaceni, said labour inspectors were initially employed at different levels than those from other provinces.

The issue was brought to the attention of department heads in the province, requesting them to adjust the pay scales of provincial and regional inspectors.

Nehawu provincial coordinator Nonkoliso Cetywayo, said inspectors had decided to picket daily until their grievances received attention.

Chief director of the provincial department of labour, Bheki Gama, referred all questions to Tina Roos, a director at national level, who could not be reached for comment at time of writing.
