All hands on deck to save pool cow

A hapless young cow that wandered through an open gate into a Grahamstown property late at night in pursuit of green grass, instead ended up taking a dip in the swimming pool.

To make matters worse for the young cow – who together with her two stray mates had decided to try out the green lawn on offer – the swimming pool had no steps.

Local SPCA manager Jorrie Gardner said she thought she was dreaming when, at 1.15am on Thursday morning, she was woken by a phonecall from a man with the bizarre news that he had a cow in his swimming pool and had no means of getting it out.

Resisting the urge to tell the man to pull the “udder one” she swiftly dressed and headed out into the icy night.

Gardner said she quickly ascertained there was no way she could get the cow out of the pool alone.

A trip to the fire department secured her the assistance of platoon commander Lunga Mkhuzo and firefighters Thanduxolo Casper and Daluxolo Mkhaza.

Gardner bravely plunged in to join the cow in the freezing water to secure fire hoses around its back end.

With some men pulling at the cow’s front legs, others heaving at the hoses and Gardner pushing it from the rear, the young heifer was finally hauled out.

A mootiful ending all round.
