The 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children ended yesterday, two days later. Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said at about 9pm, at Kwezo squatter camp near Msobomvu, the man, 24, accosted her, dragged her into the bushes and raped her.

“It seems as if the suspect was known to her because when she reported the rape at the Msobomvu police station she identified him and police traced and arrested him,” said Manatha.

She was taken to Thuthuzela Care Centre at Butterworth Hospital where she was treated and discharged.

He is due before the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court today.

lA man who shot dead an alleged robber is being sought by police after he was approached by three alleged robbers while he was depositing money in Dutywa’s Main Street on Saturday night.

Manatha said the man pulled out a firearm and shot one suspect who died at the scene during the botched robbery at 7.40pm. The man died instantly.

“The other suspects ran for their dear lives,” said Manatha, who has urged the shooter as well as the alleged robbers to come forward.

“Why run away? If you shoot and kill someone it is a murder charge in South Africa, but it is then up to the Director of Public Prosecutions to decide whether to prosecute or if it was done in self defence.”

lPolice have asked members of the public who are missing a loved one or family member to help identify the body of a young man who was found murdered on a Dutywa pavement on Saturday morning.

Manatha said the man, who looked to be in his late 20s, had injuries to his upper body, suggesting he had been stabbed to death.

Anyone wishing to try to identify the body should please call 047-489-1333 or visit the Dutywa police station.

The man will appear before the Willowvale Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder today.
