The first Momentum Friendship Games held in the Border region were enjoyed by all when the Standard Bank Alice Regional Performance Centre teams hosted Selborne College at the University of Fort Hare on Thursday.

Selborne walked away with wins in the U15 and U19 T20 matches, but the Alice RPC teams gave a good account of themselves in both games.

In the U19 game Selborne batted first and scored a strong 198/2 in their 20 overs thanks to an impressive opening partnership between Stuart Els and Challen Watson.

Els and Watson put on 147 for the first wicket within 15 overs, before Chellan became the first to fall, run out for 52 off 34 balls (4x4; 2x6).

Just two balls and four runs later Els was also heading back, out for an impressive 82 off 54 balls (10x4; 2x6).

New batsmen Aiden van Wyk (17no) and Ethan Boucher (23no) shared an unbroken 47-run stand to get Selborne to just shy of 200.

The Alice RPC side knew that reaching that target was probably a bridge too far, so they had just one mission – to bat out their 20 overs – and they managed that well, scoring 111/9 in their 20 overs, to go down by 87 runs.

The effort was spearheaded by middle order batsman Siyamthanda Zini, who scored a patient 40 off 50 balls (1x4), while Sesethu Mayase (14) and Buhle Shoba (13) were the only other two batsmen to reach double figures.

Selborne’s bowling effort was led by Grant Pretorius, with figures of 3/14 and Sazi Mgabisa with 3/15, both off three overs.

The U15 game was a bit closer, but still ended as a comfortable 50-run win for Selborne.

Batting first the visitors made 140/8, thanks to contributions from the top three batsmen, Matthew Coetzer (16), Adam du Plessis (36) and Ricky Vaupotic (23) and number six James Calver (14).

Mihle Matyeni was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4/52.

The Alice RPC side had a small chance to try to chase the score down, but in the end needed to bat out the last two overs to survive, ending on 90/9.

Siphelele Ramata (17) and Avafatye Kweya (10) shared in the innings’ biggest stand of 24 runs for the third wicket, while a 15-run last wicket stand between top scorer Lwando Shoba (28 off 30 balls, 4x4) and last man Matyeni (9no) made sure they were not all out.

Selborne’s bowling effort was led by Guy Bishop, who picked up 3/20 in his four overs, while Shamendra Packery finished with 2/11.
