Escaped EC murderers on the run

Two identical looking Eastern Cape murderers and brothers are among four dangerous prisoners who shot and wounded a prison guard and escaped from the Rooigrond prison in Mahikeng, North West.

They are believed to be hiding out in the Eastern Cape.

Prison officials are on high alert, said provincial correctional services commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast.

Libode-born Simphiwe Makanda, 35, and Mandisi Makanda, 31, are believed to be the masterminds behind the dramatic midday escape. The four disarmed the warder, shot him and sped off in a stolen prison vehicle driven by Mandisi Makanda.

The other escapees in the car are Alfred Mandela, 40, and Nkululeko Vava, 32.

Breakfast urged people not to approach them but to call police because they are armed and dangerous.
