East London  police have opened an inquest docket after two foetuses were found dumped near the Greenpoint High School in East London on Saturday morning.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the first foetus had been found by a resident who then alerted the police. A little more than an hour later, another foetus was found in the same area by the same individual. Police could not confirm the age of the foetuses.

Geovonne Fritz, who made the heartbreaking discovery at 8am, said he was collecting boxes at an illegal dumpsite near the school.

“I was busy collecting boxes to use them to burn a bush near where I stay. When I picked up the boxes something fell on my foot and I realised it was a baby. I double-checked to make sure it was really a baby and after that I went and told people at a nearby shop.

“I then told my boss who called the police station and they came and took the baby away.”

An hour later Fritz got the shock of his life again. “I went to the same spot to show someone I was with where I had found the first baby. I showed him the white blanket still with blood on it, as I picked it up another baby rolled out. I thought I must be having a bad dream.”

Continued Fritz: “I asked my friend to come and see.” The friend confirmed what he was seeing and the pair ran to the police station.

He claims police officials at the Buffalo Flats police station at first did not believe him. “When I told the police what was happening they said the baby had already been taken that morning but I told them there was another baby.

“They would not believe me,” said Fritz, adding that he barely believed it himself.

Police eventually accompanied him to the spot where the second foetus lay. “How did they not see two babies lying next to each other? And why was the white blanket that they were covered in still lying there?”

Mqala responded to this question saying that police were there to respond to community members not looking for foetuses.

When the Daily Dispatch visited the area, the white blanket the foetuses had been wrapped in, was still lying on the ground.

Fritz said: “I have seen a lot of bad things, I have spent years in prison but that was the worst thing I have ever seen.”

Ward councillor Richard Rooy said: “This is the first time in my time as ward councillor here that we have seen something of this nature. We do not want to speculate on who might have done this but the police are doing their investigations and will get to the bottom of this matter.”
