Police and youths in running battles in Mlungisi

A smart shopping centre was in flames in violence-torn Stutterheim’s Mlungisi township in the morning.
Thick plumes of acrid smoke billowed as fire fighters from Stutterheim and Working for Fire battled the blaze.
By lunchtime they appeared to have got the blaze under control.
Stones whizzed through the air forcing journalists to keep their distance but an armada of police bakkies and armoured hippos were seen moving about firing rubber bullets and teargas.
Youths were seen in groups of 50, gathering and splitting up as the police approached.
DispatchLIVE saw police fire three teargas canisters at a group, and each of the smoking projectiles were picked up by youths hurled back.
Youths were seen throwing stones and half-bricks at the police...
