BCM tops in SA for housing delivery

Buffalo City Metro is the top performing municipality in the country in housing delivery for 2018.
The city received the accolade at the national department of human settlements Govan Mbeki Awards at the East London ICC on Friday night.
More than 20 awards were handed out to performing provinces, projects and municipalities.
Human settlements minister Nomaindiya Mfeketo thanked the winners for their hard work.
BCM human settlements head of department Luyanda Mbula said: “We are super excited about this news.
“They considered planning, budgeting, financial management and housing delivery,” said Mbula, adding it had been a challenging 2018 with housing delivery protests in Breidbach, Potsdam and Fynbos.
The metro did not win any accolades in 2017’s awards.
The runner-up was the City of Cape Town and the second runner-up was eThekwini Metro.
The Eastern Cape walked away with several other awards as well.
Chris Hani District Municipality was crowned for the best enhanced people’s housing project for Lubisi 1,000, and the best student in a scholarship programme went to the Eastern Cape’s Pontsho Pitsi.
OR Tambo District Municipality was first runner-up in the best rural project category for Langeni 800 and also took best non-subsidy contractor, which went to Wezy Construction.
The province also bagged the second runner-up positions for the best performing province and best integrated residential development project for Molteno Airstrip Phase2 in Chris Hani.
Before the ceremony on Friday, Mfeketo, together with provincial and human settlements MEC Babalo Madikizela among other dignitaries, handed over a R900,000 newly built home for Mamuto Notemba Fazzie, 91, the wife of struggle stalwart Henry Fazzie, who died in the fight against apartheid, with their children, Mzwanele and Sicelo...
