Pupils told to bring own water to school

Pupils are being told to bring water from their homes as water is only available for an hour during school hours.
For 512 Tarkastad High School pupils and their 30 teachers, every day is a struggle as there is no water to drink or flush their toilets.
Water is only available from 5am to 9am, and all the school taps are dry.
The school principal, Gerhard Kitching, says the severe drought conditions has taken a toll on Tarkastad.
“At the school we encounter a threatening health problem. We only have water until around about 9am in the mornings. Thereafter the water supply is cut off by the municipality to save water,” he said.
Kitching said the problem arises then when pupils and the staff visit the toilets.
“There is no water to flush the toilet regularly. I am sincerely worried about a disease that can break out. We also do not have enough drinking water for the pupils as it is extremely hot during the day,” Kitching said.
He said they have decided to encourage pupils to bring their own drinking water to the school.
Ward councilor Bonile Ngesi said some areas in Tarkastad have water for four hours everyday.
