The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the indefinite postponement of a case brought by an East London man who is suing the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) for unfair dismissal.

Mzukisi Makatse is suing his former employer for firing him a day after he refused to approve funding for the Buyel'Ekhaya Annual Music Festival in 2017.

The matter was set down to be heard on Wednesday in the high court sitting in East London.

It was removed from the roll by judge Bantubonke Tokota after the defendants requested a postponement.

Makatse's attorney, Bayanda Bakumeni, told DispatchLIVE that the defendants' lawyers requested the postponement as their witnesses were all over the country and travelling to East London would be risky for them in the light of the coronavirus outbreak.

"This case was postponed last year in October. It is frustrating for my client because we want the matter to be finalised. He is suffering as a result," Bakumeni said.

Makatse, the former grant agreement officer at the NLC, is suing the commission for breach of contract, loss of earnings and future loss of earnings.
