People living in East London will soon have access to an R87m sport and recreation facility that is expected to be completed before the end of 2020.

After the handover of the construction sites to the appointed contractors on February 12, Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) mayor Xola Pakati on Friday launched two projects, which are expected to boast outdoor gyms, children’s’play areas, art facilities, fencing, ablution facilities, changing rooms and parking areas.

The two projects are the Water World Fun Park in Ward 46 and the Court Crescent Recreational Park in Ward 47.

During the construction of the projects, East London’s Esplanade will be totally shut down.

The area’s ward councillor, Vusumzi Njele, said the start of the construction followed years of planning between BCM, local businesses and the community.

Pakati, who attended the sod-turning ceremony, said the projects would create jobs and be tourist attractions, helping to boost the local economy.

Pakati said the parks would include custom-designed play areas, outdoor exercise zones, and multipurpose courts for informal games to promote active recreation.

He said he was excited to have finally launched the “groundbreaking” projects.

“We’ve got to be seen to be doing work, if we don’t do that, we will find it difficult to explain our existence,” he said, adding that “we want the best for the people of this town”.

“With tourism there are direct benefits. The finalisation of this project will be a catalyst of many business attractions,” he said.

It was important that the construction was completed on time, to avoid wasteful and irregular expenditure, Pakati stated.

“I hate shoddy work. We must ensure high quality so that we see value in the money of the taxpayer,” he said.

Njele told Daily Dispatch there were two other projects that were already being constructed.

He said small businesses and subcontractors in and about the municipality would benefit from the projects.

“We want to make the beachfront lively, make it attractive.

“We are doing this to give people a reason to come to the beach,” he said.
