Experienced administrator and seasoned politician Mbulelo Sogoni is back for a second stint as the director-general of the Eastern Cape.

Sogoni, who was premier from August 2008 until May 2009 and also served as MEC of various portfolios, including agriculture, economic development and rural development, was announced as the province's new administrative boss by premier Oscar Mabuyane.

The Eastern Cape had been without a permanent director-general since Marion Mbina-Mthembu took early retirement late last year, with Mzimkhulu Machemba holding the fort while the search for the top official continued.

Sogoni's appointment comes after the Eastern Cape had missed the April 1 target it had set itself to fill the position.

Announcing his appointment at a virtual press conference, Mabuyane described Sogoni as an experienced administrator who has what it takes to lead and schieve the "Eastern Cape that we want".

Sogoni takes over the hot seat with the province having incurred R869m irregular expenditure during the 2018/19 financial year — with the department of health, office of the premier, and public works accounting for R727m.

So what are his top priorities?

Sogoni said his responsibility would be to implement Mabuyane's priorities and those of his executive.
