Eastern Cape police spokesperson Khaya Tonjeni said the suspects, aged between 19 and 41, were arrested after a K9 division member received a tip-off.

“The member contacted his colleague who is working with the second hand shops and scrap metals. They followed the truck and stopped it at Beaconsfield Road,” said Tonjeni.

“They went back to the scrap yard with the driver of the truck where they found the owner and three other men. Different cables were found at the scrap yard and confiscated.”

The cables had a total estimated replacement value of more than a million rand.

“Telkom, BCM, and Transnet officials were contacted to identify their cables,” said Tonjeni.

The truck used by the suspects has been taken to camp 13 for further investigation.

A case of possession of suspected stolen property and charges relating to the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015 have been opened.

All four suspects were due to appear in the East London magistrate's court.
