The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating circumstances around the death of a man who was killed by police in Lusikisiki on Thursday.

It is alleged that two police officers each discharged two rounds with their service pistols when they were confronted by the suspect, who they claim threw stones at them while advancing towards them with a knife.

The man had allegedly stabbed his wife to death before fleeing and was later found hiding in bushes on the nearby cliffs by the K9 unit from Lusikisiki.

The deceased was tracked down by the police dog in bushes on a cliff, where he was hiding among rocks with a single entry point. The officers claimed they could not retreat without endangering their own lives on the tricky terrain along the cliff side, and were forced to defend themselves.

A post mortem was conducted earlier on Friday
