Boks trounce Uganda to book a World Cup spot

THE Springbok Women’s team ensured their participation in next year’s IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup in France when they comprehensively defeated Uganda 63-3 in a one-off qualifier at the Buffalo City Stadium at the weekend.

The Springboks were simply too strong, too fast and too accurate for their African counterparts, who were playing their first game outside of East Africa.

The Aslam Abrahams-coached Boks, led by East London hero Mandisa Williams, on Saturday ran in 11 tries past the Ugandans on their way to record their highest winning margin in an international game.

The Springboks maintained an easy game plan, sucking Uganda in with phases up front and then hitting them on the break out wide.

In the first half, the Boks took time building up their play well. Also, they crossed the tryline every time the ball ran through the backline to the wings before coming out with their robust forwards in the second half.

“At half time, the coaching staff just encouraged us to keep our game plan as is and hold our defensive lines well and we did,” the Bok captain revealed.

“Credit must go to the whole team for holding their own and sticking to their requirements.”

The Springboks scored their tries through Marlien Cronje (2), Dolly Mavumengwana, Zandile Nojoko (2), Zenay Jordaan, Asithandile Ntoyanto (2), Mathrin Simmers, Natasha Hofmeester and Nwabisa Ngxatu.

Flyhalf Jordaan and replacement Marnazelle Rabie converted a try each, with Nojoko slotting two conversions of her own.

According to Springboks caretaker coach Abrahams, the technical staff was pleased with the victory.

“I think the girls played really well up front to set up the ball for the backs,” Abrahams said.

“More credit must go to Fundiswa Plaatjie for the outstanding game she had. She again showed what a special player she is and this proves why many overseas countries want her to go there and play club rugby.”

The action will now shift back to the Women’s Interprovincial tournament, which enters its semifinal stages next weekend with Border hosting Free State at the Buffalo City Stadium.

The second semifinal features KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

  •  Meanwhile, the Border Bulldogs went down 24-19 to the Griffons in Welkom at the weekend.
