The second day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) National U15 cricket week was played out across East London yesterday.

In a second day of time cricket, some interesting match ups were had as teams battled to gain the upper hand.

Eastern Cape sides Border and Eastern Province once again went looking for a positive result against Easterns and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Coastal respectively in the difficult format.

Hosts Border managed to claim a first innings win yesterday after bowling Easterns out for 102 and then reaching 106/3 after drinks.

An outright result, however, did not seem very likely as both sides still had another innings in hand.

EP seemed to just have the upper hand over KZN Coastal at drinks, with Coastal on 82/4 after EP scored 227/5 declared before lunch.

That match also would likely not have reached an outright result, while EP will have been gunning for an innings win at least.

In the morning Easterns won the toss and elected to bat, getting off to a slow start as they tried to build a good first wicket stand.

However, having scored 24 off the first 12 overs, Bandile Sihlumile had opener Willem Myburgh caught behind by wicketkeeper Thomas Bursey for 15 in the 13th over.

Sihlumile and Bursey then teamed up again to remove Andre Enslin (5) as Easterns slipped to 29/2. Easterns tried to build as Mohammed Ghanchi and Kade Justus added 10 runs to the total off 52 balls but their stoic defence was broken by Tristan Alexander, who bowled Justus for three.

Ghanchi (10) then followed, caught behind by Bursey off Sebastian Denison-Brown and they dropped to 45/4.

That became 58/6 when Alexander struck in the 34th and 36th overs, first having Riccardo Meade (9) caught by Denison-Brown and then doing the fielding himself off his own bowling as Sahil Khan (1) popped a catch back to him.

Musawenkosi Twala and Rickus Neethling then stopped the carnage with a decent 22-run stand off 38 balls. Captain Matthew Dewar brought himself into the attack late and in an impressive 4.5 over spell cleaned up the tail.

Dewar first removed Neethling, caught by Akhanya Rebe for 16, and then the final three wickets within six balls.

He trapped Zwane Simenulankla (2) in front at the end of the 46th over, Nxumalo Ntlakanipho (1) was then also pinned in front with the fourth ball of the 48th over, and then the very next ball Monde Bala offered Sihlumile a catch off Dewar to depart for a duck and end the Easterns innings on 102 all out.

Dewar’s 4/5 was the pick of the bunch, but Alexander 3/29, Sihlumile 2/23 and Denison-Brown 1/20 all chipped in.

In EP’s match they batted well to give themselves a good chance of fighting for an outright result. However, by drinks that was looking unlikely and they will have been aiming for an innings win.

Peter Jarvis led the charge as he cracked a superb century, backing up his half century that he scored on the first day.

Jarvis came to the wicket after a decent 48-run opening partnership and was only dismissed with EP on 224. They declared five balls later.

He scored 113 in the end, striking 16 boundaries along the way, and he and Tristan Stubbs (46) shared in a 107 third wicket partnership that helped set up the total.

Coastal reached 82/4 with EP’s Nicholas Fowler 2/13 off six overs leading the bowling effort.

In other games, South Western Districts (SWD) and North West did not look like they would reach an outright result. However, SWD were on track to win the first innings after scoring 158 all out, and they had North West at 73/6 at drinks.

Gauteng and Boland were also heading for an overall draw but Boland should win the first innings having reached drinks on 91/5, chasing Gauteng’s first innings 114.

Free State were in with a shout of claiming an overall win after they bowled KZN Inland out for 46, won the first innings by scoring 95 all out and then had Inland on 53/4 at drinks, a lead of just four runs.

Mpumalanga and Limpopo were heading for an overall draw, with their match pretty even at drinks after Mpumalanga scored 149 all out and Limpopo, in their reply, were on 70/3 in their first innings.

Northerns looked to be heading for a first innings win and a possible overall result over Western Province after Northerns scored a top 286/4 declared and had Western Province in trouble on 80/5 at drinks.

Namibia and Northern Cape were on for an overall draw after Namibia were bowled out for 174 and then NC reached drinks at 86/4.
