Thumbs up for derby coaches

Kaizer Chiefs fans calling for Steve Komphela to get fired should forget about it.

On a day when it was confirmed that successful former Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is returning to the PSL to coach SuperSport United, Amakhosi chairman Kaizer Motaung said supporters should be educated as he backed Komphela as the man for the job at Naturena

Amakhosi are without a trophy this season after two cup final defeats and they’ve been inconsistent in the Absa Premiership, where they currently sit in fourth place on 25 points, eight behind leaders Sundowns, who are cruising right now.

But Chiefs’ management is not pressing panic buttons, and a defeat in the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday will not trigger any hasty reaction either.

“I don’t think we are supposed to apply a reaction to any situation that happens now.

“Just to make an example. Pitso Mosimane, two or three months ago, was perceived by some of the Sundowns supporters as useless for the team. He was pelted with all sorts of missiles. Where is he today? He is on top of the log and he has one trophy already.”

Komphela has not given up on defending Amakhosi’s title, despite a run of inconsistent results. Chiefs need a run of good results, starting with the derby tomorrow, if they are to usurp Sundowns at the top of the table.

“Some of you will remember that when we brought Stuart we were under a lot of pressure. People were saying why are we bringing this guy because he failed with Bafana Bafana. It’s not wise to react on the basis of what people are saying but rather to do things in a responsible manner.”
