Juniors launch Buffs racing

An exciting day of junior rowing action opened the 129th annual Buffalo Regatta at the Buffalo River yesterday morning.

The full day of heat action saw school teams battling it out to reach Saturday’s final day of finals.

To qualify for the finals most teams had to finish first in some heats and first and second in others for automatic qualification, while the rest of the qualifiers had to be in the next quickest times to make it in.

On the junior men side St Johns, St Albans and Rondebosch Boys picked up the most automatic qualifications.

Local hope Selborne managed three qualifications, with two heat wins and one second place finish during the day.

As early as the third heat of the day the Selborne U15 fours claimed the heat win to move into the final on Saturday.

Later in the day the Selborne junior men U15 pair claimed a heat win and the Selborne U19 second eight finished second in their heat to make their respective finals.

St Albans managed the most first place qualifications on the day, claiming eight, while St Johns and Rondebosch both claimed five first place heats.

St Johns, however, claimed the most automatic qualifications as they had seven second place qualifiers, while Rondebosch had two and St Albans had one.

Other teams who did well were Grey High School, who claimed four first and one second place automatic qualifiers, St Andrew’s College with three firsts and two seconds, St Stithians and Bishops with three firsts each and South African College School with two firsts and a second.

Only one final was rowed on the day and that was the Junior Men second four final.

St Andrew’s took the win, with St Johns in second and Selborne claiming a solid third place finish.

On the women’s side of the draw, St Andrew’s Girls and St Mary’s were the top two automatic qualifying teams.

Local side Clarendon did well to claim four automatic qualifications, three firsts and one second.

It was mostly the scullers who shone as two Clarendon junior women U15 scullers and one U19 sculler won their heats to move into the final, while the Clarendon U19 junior women pair came second in their heat to make the final.

St Andrew’s Girls and St Mary’s both had nine automatic qualifiers, with St Andrew’s claiming seven firsts and two seconds, while St Mary’s managed six firsts and three seconds.

Holy Rosary and Somerset both managed four first and one second automatic qualifiers, St Stithians girls claimed three firsts and Peninsula girls claimed three seconds.

Today will see the 57th annual Selborne Sprints Regatta and first Buffalo Sprints over 500m take centre stage.

The action starts today at 6:30am and concludes by 6:50pm tonight.
