Old Boys, WSU out to increase the gap

The cushion is increasing between the front-runners and chasing pack in the Border Super League as club rugby action continues to heat up as the season progresses.

Nine points separate third-placed Police from fourth-placed Swallows, while a whole host of teams are packed in behind them.

“In terms of results some of the scores have not been as big as in previous seasons and this is good to see as the league, despite how the log looks, is becoming more competitive,” Border club rugby head, Simphiwe Ntantala said.

The table-topping Old Selbornians team, along with the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) All Blacks lead the log on 22 points with the teams separated only by points difference.

Police is sitting on 21 points.

Swallows with 12, the Fort Hare Blues on 10 and Ocean Sweepers and Africans on nine points each, lead the chasing pack. Although Swallows, the Blues and Ocean Sweepers all have a game in hand on the top three, closing that gap will prove extremely tricky, especially when they clash with the top sides.

Old Boys will be expected to keep up the impressive head of steam they have built up with five wins in a row and a solid 59-20 thumping of Winter Rose in their last outing, when they play second-from-bottom Berlin Tigers in Berlin.

The Tigers have battled so far this season and head into the match without a win in five games.

The All Blacks will host Cambridge in what could be a tricky encounter at WSU in Potsdam.

Although they have also won five -in--a-row and crushed Africans 64-10 in King William’s Town, they face a fired-up Cambridge who themselves are coming off a big win.

Cambridge claimed a powerful 40-22 win over Buffs to register their first win of the competition in their last match and they will want to take that momentum into this game.

WSU should be able to claim the win at home seeing that they will have vocal support in their own backyard.

“This season is looking very interesting. I think so far WSU are looking very good and although Old Boys and Police are the usual front-runners, I think WSU are a strong underdog candidate,” Ntantala said.

Police will be aiming to bounce back after their perfect start to the season was halted by Swallows last weekend when they drew 16-16.

It meant Police slipped from first to third on the log and they will be eager to bounce back with a solid performance against Winter Rose and keep the heat on the top two.

Winter Rose will themselves want to put in a good performance after the heavy defeat against Old Boys and being back at home in Mdantsane, they will look to their support to lift them.

Ocean Sweepers travel to Queenstown to take on bottom side Breakers in their club clash.

Sweepers are on a good run, with two wins on the bounce and they will want to get another over Breakers, who are without a win in four and have only picked up one losing bonus point so far this season.

In other matches over the weekend, Swallows are favourites when they welcome Africans to Mdantsane for their clash, while an intriguing battle will be on the cards when Buffs welcome Fort Hare to Buffalo Park.

All matches kick off at 3.30pm this afternoon.
