Premier soccer action is set to return to East London after it was confirmed that Chippa United will be playing matches in the city once again.

Although the Buffalo City Stadium did not appear on the fixture list for the new season released yesterday, Chippa chief operating officer Lukhanyo Mzinzi moved quickly to allay fears that they would not be returning by confidently stating that matches would be back.

“We will definitely be back to play in East London,” said Mzinzi.

“We still have things to discuss and confirm but we expect to have the first match here possibly in November.”

This was backed up by Buffalo City Metro local organising committee head Sthembiso Khanyile who confirmed that plans were at an advanced stage to bring matches to the city.

“Chippa will be playing in East London again, it is a multi agreement which we have with them and as long as Chippa is based in the Eastern Cape we will see top flight football here,” he said.

“On their way to a camp in Pietermaritzburg they stopped in East London for a night and had a training session at the Sisa Dukashe stadium and for me that was the confirmation that East London is home to Chippa.”

The only things we will be finalising with them are when we will have the first game, who we will play against here and how many games we will have.”

Last season four games were hosted in East London and long suffering fans responded to the return of top flight football by turning out in their numbers to support them.

This number could now possibly rise to six matches this season which will bring added excitement to the local supporters.

“The games held in East London last year were very exciting and the support here was brilliant,” said Mzinzi.

“We are planning to bring about five league games to East London and one cup match.”

“East London is a part of us now, you can’t not have matches here and we will continue to bring top class football to the fans.”

It is expected that the official fixtures for East London will be confirmed by the end of this month so fans should know soon who Chippa will be facing here.

“I believe that we will have finalised the fixtures by the end of August,” said Khanyile.

Chippa open their PSL campaign this season with a home match against Free State Stars at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on the August 23.

Their massive league games against Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are then set for November 22 and December 3 respectively with both games set to take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
