Cosmos in survival mode against Bucks

Mthatha Bucks will be out to cement their place at the top of the NFD log standings tomorrow when they visit Jomo Cosmos at the Fanie Du Toit Stadium in Potchefstroom.

The two meet for the first time.

As things stand, it would seem Bucks are favourites, as they have yet to lose a match after three outings in the 2016-17 campaign, while their foes have recorded two draws and a defeat.

They are on opposite ends of the log, with Bucks at the summit on seven points while Ezenkosi yam lie second from bottom with just two points.

Although Bucks are the team to beat in the NFD, their head coach Velile Dyaloyi believes that Cosmos are the favourites ahead of tomorrow’s clash.

Dyaloyi said: “Remember, Cosmos are a former PSL side with players who have played at that level, which is an experience that makes them a dangerous side.”

If there is a department in which Bucks must tighten up it is at the back, after they conceded two silly goals in their 2-2 draw against AmaZulu last weekend.

They will apply a cautious approach, said Dyaloyi, but not in the form of parking the bus.

“We are playing away, therefore we must be cautious and catch them on counter attack, but we shall not be parking the bus as it were.

“It is vital that we get that away goal and indeed we will be out for maximum points.”

Should Bucks succeed in their quest for three points, it will take them to 10 points after just four matches into the season.

Cosmos’ mission is to move away from the relegation zone.

They surely would not like to emulate Moroka Swallows, who dropped from Premier League to second division in just two domestic football seasons.

At this stage, position 15 makes them a candidate for relegation to the Motsepe League.

They have tomorrow to turn things around, but in Bucks they meet a highly organised side that has conceded only three goals while scoring six.

It does not help Cosmos that they have been firing blanks in front of goal, with a paltry three goals in as many matches, while leaking four times.

Bucks will go to tomorrow’s match knowing how many points they need to remain on top, with this encounter being the last one in round four of matches.

In Thohoyandou Stadium today, Black Leopards welcome Milano United.

But the NFD match of the weekend will take centre stage at Princess Magogo Stadium today, where AmaZulu will collide with University of Pretoria in what will be a clash between two former Premier League sides.

Other NFD weekend fixtures today: Witbank Spurs v Magesi FC (Puma Rugby Stadium); FC Cape Town v Real Kings FC (NNK Rugby Stadium); Mbombela United v Thanda Royal Zulu FC (Kanyamazane Stadium)
