Wits aim to topple Bucs

Bidvest Wits will target their second win over Orlando Pirates this season when the two giants meet in a top-of-the-table Absa Premiership clash at Bidvest Stadium tonight.

Gavin Hunt’s men, second on the log standings, have started their 2016-17 league campaign on a high as they are unbeaten thus far.

In the league, the Clever Boys have two wins, which came from their victories over Baroka FC and Kaizer Chiefs, as well as one draw.

However, they have also done well in the MTN8 Cup competition, having beaten Muhsin Ertugral’s men and Cape Town City in a two-legged semifinal to reach the final, where they have a date with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Heading into this league encounter at home, the Students are out to claim the top spot in the league.

Wits and Pirates are tied on seven points, with the former on top of the log thanks to a superior goal difference.

And the hosts will draw confidence from their 2-1 win in the Wafa Wafa tournament, with goals from defenders Buhle Mkhwanazi and Thulani Hlatshwayo that ensured the Soweto giants were knocked out of the competition.

Hlatshwayo, also Wits skipper, has been a revelation for his side, leading from the front, and has also found his way into the scoring charts with a single goal in the league.

The red hot Tyson, as Hlatshwayo is affectionately known, is a man to watch.

The likes of in-from Bucs forward Tendai Ndoro will have to be at their best to get past the hard working defender, while Pirates defenders will have to be awake to stop him from increasing his scoring tally.

Hunt will also call on his central defenders as well as wingers such as Daine Klate and Elias Pelembe to help frustrate the visitors.

The new midfielder, Thabang Monare, with a goal for himself, has also started his Wits stay in fine form and will be a vital member on the day.

“Well, since I have been at Bidvest Wits, the role that I have been playing…every game since the start of the season I expect to score and I am sure it will continue,” said Monare.

“I believe that we are still building a team. Yes, we have had a good start, but it is too early in the season to start judging.”

It is Wits who come to this encounter with their tails high, having clobbered Baroka by 2-0 on Tuesday night, while Pirates fumbled to a goalless draw against Cape Town City on the same night.

It is for this reason that Ertugral will push his side to get back to winning ways.

The Sea Robbers are aware that winning against Wits will boost their morale and be sweet revenge for their MTN8 loss.

Ertugral has been vocal about finishing their chances, which can only be a signal for a team with a mission to bury every chance they get.

For that they will look to Ndoro, who has found the back of the net five times already. — Backpage Media
