The Warriors will go into today’s Sunfoil Series clash against the Knights at St George’s Park with some fringe players looking to make an impression.

The selection panel have decided to omit opener Michael Price in the starting line-up and have replaced him with in-form batsman-offspinner Gionne Koopman, who made 130 and 65 for Border in his last provincial match.

Also out of the side are experienced seamer Andrew Birch and last season’s star bowler Sisanda Magala. Birch has a side-strain and Magala is suffering from fatigue after having started his season with South Africa A in Australia in June before joining up with the Warriors for the domestic campaign.

They are replaced by experienced allrounder Aya Gqamane and fast bowler Anrich Nortje.

“They have a nice team. They have got good firepower and it will be great challenge for us. We have gone for youth in this game and hopefully they go out and show us what they made of,” said coach Malibongwe Maketa.

“The guys who have performed for the affiliates have been rewarded with a spot in the franchise side, so let’s see how they get on with the opportunities they are given.”

The Warriors will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss to the Highveld Lions in Johannesburg last weekend. They suffered a second innings batting collapse on the final day to hand the home side a rather easy victory.

The Knights have a strong line-up and have performed well as a unit this season having won two and drawn two matches.

David Miller will want to kick on and score another big one after making 177 on debut for the Knights against the Lions in Kimberley before getting 60 against the Dolphins in Durban last week. His match-winning 118 not out for the Proteas against Australia last month is still fresh in the memory.

They have a potentially potent weapon in Marchant de Lange in their ranks, although how effective he will be in the game will depend on what the surface is like. Their bowling ranks also include young Duane Olivier, who is the competition’s leading wicket-taker with 23 and Robin Peterson, who has been knocking over wickets as recent as last week when he took six against the Dolphins in a rain-affected draw.

They will be captained by Theunis de Bruyn.

The squads are:

WARRIORS: Colin Ackermann, Tladi Bokako, Gihahn Cloete, Clyde Fortuin, Aya Gqamane, Simon Harmer (capt), Gionne Koopman, Edward Moore, Lesiba Ngoepe, Anrich Nortje, Somila Seyibokwe, Yaseen Vallie, Basheer Walters

KNIGHTS: David Miller, Dillon du Preez, Duanne Olivier, Luthando Mnyanda, Marchant de Lange, Mbulelo Budaza, Michael Erlank, Robin Peterson, Rudi Second, Shadley van Schalkwyk, Theunis de Bruyn (capt), Tshepo Ntuli, Tumelo Bodibe.
