The Warriors Cubs will be aiming to lay down an early marker as they take on the Titans Cubs in their first match of the annual Cricket South Africa (CSA) Cubs Week which gets under way in Stellenbosch today.

Both teams will be gunning for the win so as to gain some good early momentum to take into the rest of the week, with the final games taking place on Sunday.

“Titans is going to be a very tough game. Northerns were the overall winners at the Coke week, so they will come in with a lot of momentum, but we are excited for the match,” said Warriors Cubs coach André de Beer.

“We want to have a good start to the week and then take it one game at a time, so we are looking for a positive result in the first match.”

The Cubs Week sees the best U19 cricketers from around the country going head to head for their respective franchise teams after their impressive form at the 2016 CSA Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week saw them picked for their respective sides.

The Warriors Cubs team is an especially strong one, featuring six players who made the top two tournament teams at the end of the Coke Week.

Matthew Breetzke and Jade de Klerk from Eastern Province, and Akhona Mnyaka and Sinethemba Qeshile from Border were named in the main SA Schools team, while Jason Raubenheimer and Siphamandla Krweqe, both from Border, were picked for the SA Colts team.

Lutho Sipamla from Eastern Province was originally in the Warriors Cubs squad and had also made the SA Schools team at the end of the Coke Week but as he has gained selection for the EP semi-professional squad for an upcoming first-class game, his place has been taken by Border’s Luke Dallas.

The other Warriors Cubs players include Jason Niemand and Axola Ngwana from Border, David Rushmere, David Masterson, Jarryd Lookwhy and Jimmy Sholto-Douglas from Eastern Province.

“We have an extremely strong team here that was picked,” said De Beer. “We had a good couple of sessions with the team last week and these guys have the potential to do very well.”

Two key batsmen to watch for the Warriors Cubs will be Qeshile and Breetzke.

Qeshile captained the Border team and, batting at number three, scored an impressive 204 runs over the Coke Week at an average of 51, with top scores of 58 against Northern Cape and 52 against Mpumalanga.

Breetzke was more prolific for EP as the opener amassed a superb 366 runs over the week at an average of 61.

His top two scores included a brilliant 101 in a 50-over match against Easterns and a solid 77 against Northerns in time cricket and he also smashed two quick half centuries in T20 matches – 69 off 47 balls against against Namibia and an awesome 63 off only 27 deliveries against Limpopo.

Both batsmen will want to take their form into the Cubs Week.

On the bowling front Border’s Krweqe picked up the most wickets over the two weeks from both teams with 11 scalps and a best of 5/40 against Western Province.

However, his fellow opening partner Mnyaka and Dallas were close behind, both having picked up 10 wickets each, with Mnyaka’s best 4/28 against Western Province and Dallas 3/9 against Easterns.

Following today’s clash against the Titans Cubs, the Warriors Cubs will play against the Cobras Cubs tomorrow and then the Zimbabwe Cubs team on Friday, with their final two games of the Cubs Week to be decided based on their results.

Two other players, Border’s Thando Ntini, the son of former Proteas star Makhaya Ntini, and Eastern Province’s Keenan Smith are scheduled to represent a SA U17 select team which will oppose the franchise Cubs teams.

The action starts at 10am.
