The ever-popular Kempston Ladies Nite race is set to brighten up the night as the community’s favourite race sets off at 5pm tomorrow from Oxford Striders Running Club.

Runners from all over the region will be taking on the 10km race, exclusively for women and the non-timed 5km fun run – which men are allowed to enter – provided they dress up as “ladies” (in drag).

Kempston Group CEO Tony Cotterrell says the race is a way of giving back to the community who has supported them over the years.

“Kempston has enjoyed the support of the East London community for the last 40-odd years, and we are committed to giving back to that community by way of identifying and sponsoring events for the more vulnerable citizens such as the elderly and underprivileged,” said Cotterell.

The Kempston Group has sponsored the Ladies Nite Race for the past 14 years.

“Traditionally women’s athletic events were not as well sponsored as those of their male counterparts and we wanted to recognise the important role that women play in our lives,” said Cotterell.

Over 2500 runners are expected to take part in this year’ s race, with numbers increasing annually.

“It definitely has grown, for example in 2015 we had just under 2000 entries and in 2016 we had just under 2500 entries,” Kempston marketing manager, Vanessa Cotterell said. “Kempston’s favourite part of this race is the atmosphere the community creates during the race.”

A sea of pink will engulf the streets of Nahoon during the race as competitors from all walks of life don their limited edition shirts and take on the course.

Various prizes will be available on the day, including cash prizes for the 10km run, lucky draw prizes and hampers – and best-dressed prizes for those who have entered the race.

Those runners interested in keeping the festivities going after the race will be able to do so at Oxford Striders, where a cash bar will be available.
