Resort enjoys early snowfall

HEAVY snow has fallen on the Eastern Cape’s Tiffendell ski resort and staff have been skiing for two weeks.

Tiffindell is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. Hotel manager Elizma den Heyer said the heaviest falls were 16 days ago, but 5cm of snow fell this weekend too.

On April 20, 20cm of powder snow fell, giving locals and staff the opportunity to test the lifts and slopes.

She said there was light intermittent snow in the weeks between the two heavy falls. “We’ re only officially opening for the season in June to August, but I think it looks positive for a good season,” Den Heyer said.

“W e can expect a lot of natural snow and good weather ,” she added.

Den Heyer said there had been several day visitors to the resort who had come up to enjoy some early winter snow.

She said there was also heavy snowfall on the Elliot side of the mountain over the Barkly Pass on Saturday, and day visitors stopped along the way to play in it.

Den Heyer said if snowfall had been any heavier, the visitors might not have made it through the pass.

The resort, established in 1993, is a fully equipped winter snow resort with state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming equipment, ski lifts, restaurant, ski shop, ski school and conference facilities. The multimillion-rand family resort offers a full three months of skiing each year by way of natural and man-made snow.

“W intersports enthusiasts coming to Tiffindell can look forward to a wonderful experience during the 2013 winter season,” the resort said. —
