Silver hair makes a hue-turn to youthfulness

Silver swagger, the silver fox, salt and pepper or zaddy?
Yep, arbiters of fashion Vogue, along with the company that invented hair colour, L’Oreal Paris, have jointly declared Silver Chic the 2019 colour of the year for hair and the fashion runways seem to agree.
“Not only has silver hair been a top colour trend on the runways and it is the ‘it’ colour for women of all ages, we love what the colour stands for – it symbolises charisma, ethereal energy, power, focus, and it is beyond chic,” Orrea Light, vice-president of L’Oréal Global Marketing Product Development and Beauty Innovation, told PR Newswire.
The beauty brand and magazine decided on the colour after research, analysing hair colour trends, looking at fashion inspiration around the world, on fashion runways and on social media. The February issue of Vogue and New York Fashion Week will feature the colour, while a digital campaign will encourage people to show off their own silver hair with dedicated hashtags.
L’Oreal is even releasing a dedicated variety of colours to celebrate the year of silver with colours such as Silver Blonde, Smokey Silver and Silver Blue.
While the fashion world is known for getting inspiration from decades past, it has not exactly always embraced the aged as trendsetters, but designers such as Junya Watanabe and Valentino have even graced their runways with models of a mature age.
Watanabe even called his show Silver Swagger after the “salt-and-pepper gents” who modelled the show.
According to Vogue, this is because “the allure of the hunky, polished older man is strong in today’s society”.
But that’s not to say only men can rock the silver hair. Male or female, young or old and even natural or dyed, silver is everyone’s colour. You need only find your own swagger now.

The fashionistas can be inspired by Jackie Burger’s mix of colours if they are unsure which silver hue to choose. Idris Elba
You don’t have to turn yourself into a silver fox immediately if that’s not for you. Like Elba, you can let the beard naturally bring out the salt and pepper.
Somizi Mhlongo
Somizi’s choice of colour and cut is for the daring, but it stands out beautifully and is bang on trend.
