Mobi Dixon makes history

Mobi Dixon made history at the weekend when he became Buffalo City Metro’s first DJ to win a Metro FM Music award.

Mobi Dixon – real name Mabi Ntuli – won the best dance album award for his latest album, Live The Music.

This was the second time the former Selborne College pupil has been nominated for a Metro FM Music Award.

The City Rains hit-maker was nominated for the best dance album and best male artist for this year’s awards, which took place on Saturday at the iNkosi Albert Luthuli ICC in Durban.

Ntuli, who was backstage at the time of the announcement, said he could not believe it when he heard people shouting his name.

“I was busy changing and next thing people are calling my name and my phone is also ringing.

“By the time I made it to the stage they (award announcers) had already given up and I couldn’t walk up the stage to collect my award,” he said.

Ntuli said he was happy to have received the award.

“Winning the award means that I am part of the South African music industry and I am honoured.

“I will continue making great music,” he said.

Ntuli said he would return to the province later in the year for a 10th anniversary tour of making music.

“His love for music dates back to 2007, when he started his own label, Dance is Kulcha Records and released his first project.

His big break came in 2015 with the release of his hit single, City Rains, from his debut album, Tribal Soul.

Since then, he has played on big stages nationally and abroad.

He recently released the last single from his latest album, Ezizweni featuring Berita.

He said he would now focus all his energy on the 10-year anniversary work.

One of his highlights from the second album, Live The Music, was that he got to work with United States-born house vocalist Monique Bingham on the Mixed Up Chick track. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
