McDonald’s eyes EL city centre

GLOBAL fast food chain McDonald’s confirmed that a new outlet is on the cards on the corner of Fleet and Oxford streets in East London, two of the busiest streets in the city’s central business district.

This is the second McDonald’s outlet to be built in East London this year, with the construction of another outlet near completion on the Amalinda Main Road.

Two more established McDonald’s outlets in the city operate from Devereux Avenue in Vincent and at Beacon Bay’s Retail Park.

The company is aggressively expanding its footprint around South Africa with a target of reaching 200 restaurants from the current 185 by the end of this year.

“McDonald’s has a national footprint, with restaurants in all nine provinces of South Africa.

“We will continue to explore all opportunities to be closer to our customers, as they arise,” said McDonald’s South Africa corporate affairs director Sechaba Motsieloa.

The company would not reveal details of employment during construction and when the outlet would become operational, saying it would provide details at a later stage.

It also did not comment on how much investment an aspiring franchisee has to fork out to buy a new franchise and how long the franchisee can expect to wait before they get a return on investment.

However, a document on the McDonald’s website states that start-up costs for a new franchise are around R5-million.

FNB Business Banking head of franchising Morné Cronje said McDonald’s has gained a reputation of finding prime locations for its restaurants, which ensures that franchisees get a good return on their investment.

“With the growth and popularity of franchising in South Africa, it is crucial that potential franchisees find a suitable location for their businesses that will drive business activity.

“Opening and operating a franchise is a costly affair and requires research and knowledge of the industry.

“Research on the best location, coupled with thorough competitor analysis, could help potential franchisors determine the success of their franchise,” said Cronje.

He said McDonald’s is one of the leading franchise brands in innovation, influenced by global trends.

Cronje said McDonald’s is the second largest property owner in the world. The company claims about 30000 outlets around the world. — siyam@dispatch.co.za
