Crowning glory for gospel band

AN EASTERN Cape gospel band returned victorious from this year’s Crown Gospel Music Awards held on Sunday in Durban.

King William’s Town gospel band, Zama and the Voice Ministries, won in the category of the best gospel pop album while another popular artist, Kokstad-born Mdumiseni Nzimande, popularly known as Dumi Mkokstad, won in the Song of the Year category.

Nzimande’s popular song Mbize uJehova, which is also the title track of his eighth album, netted him the award.

The song is enjoying huge airplay on both radio and television at present.

“I am really happy. I am over the moon. I do not have words to describe the feeling I have,” he said of the award.

Receiving 52000 votes, Nzimande said he composed the song after his long-time producer Big-boy Mlangeni passed away.

“I was not sure if I was going to continue singing, but I remembered that God is God in all situations and He listens to the prayers of those who believe in Him,” said Nzimande.

Leader and founder of Zama and the Voice Ministries, Zama Ntshona, said: “Words cannot begin to explain how we feel right now, this marks a vindicating moment after 10 years that all the sweating and stressing was actually worth it.

“We are very happy.”

He said they had been believers in their music for a long time.

“Even though as the years go by doubt comes, but we kept on believing this day will come.”

Ntshona said although it was not an easy category to predict because of the level of talent, they had believed it “was our time”.

He said the award was an inspiration for them to work even harder. — sinom@dispatch.co.za
