Top SA artists woo fans at beachfront

MORE than 50000 revellers converged on the East London beachfront on Saturday to enjoy the giants of the South African music industry.

The event, courtesy of the Motsepe Foundation, saw people young and old dance to the tunes of AKA, DJ Cleo, Professor, Micasa, Dr Malinga, Zahara and others.

More than 50 police officers and law enforcement officials ensured the smooth running of the free concert.

East London police said the event had gone smoothly with no reports of serious incidents.

Billionaire Patrice Motsepe arrived at the East London Airport in a private jet just after 3pm for the much anticipated event. He was greeted by a delegation from the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) mayoral office. He arrived at the VIP section of the event just after 4pm with 20 bodyguards, BCM Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha and her deputy Themba Tinta. Zahara was performing at the time.

The Foundation’s spokesman Thulani Thuswa said the concert, under the theme Christmas With Our People, had been incident free.

“The turnout was good and the event was successful in every way but the most important thing is that we managed to host a safe concert with no controversies,” Thuswa said.

“The good thing about East London people is that they always come in their numbers and they are very responsible people,”

Thuswa praised his boss for fostering strong family values.

“ wants to see people happy irrespective of who they are. Hence this concert was free and it was hosted during the day so that families could come out and enjoy it,” he said.

Prince Sivile Mabandla, a guest at the event said the event was a good gesture and significant contribution to tourism, nation building and bringing recognition to the province of Eastern Cape.

The mayor described the concert as an “overwhelming success”.

“On Saturday we showed the world that there is life in BCM,” she said.

Nomphelo Gxigxi of Mdantsane said she arrived at the venue with her 14-year-old son three hours before the show started.

“We were some of the first people to arrive at the concert. The atmosphere was amazing. AKA’s performance was to die for,” Gxigxi said.

Ziyamnkelwa Rwayi a second year marketing student at the Walter Sisulu University said: “Dr Malinga’s performance worked for me but all in all every artist performed well.” — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
