Bhisho rolls out support for matrics

MEC sets sights on 70% pass rate

WITH only 139 days to the start of the 2014 matric exams, the provincial education department has launched an Information and Communications Technology campaign as part of its support programme.

This was announced by education MEC Mandla Makupula and head of department Mthunywa Ngonzo at a press briefing at the East London IDZ yesterday.

Forming part of the R120-million campaign, 46 telematics centres have been attached to various schools.

These centres will allow for live maths and language lessons from the University of Stellenbosch.

A summit will also be held later this month which will see the integration of ICT into teaching and learning in all schools across the province.

Ngonzo said the department was in the process of creating e-mail addresses for the 68000 pupils enrolled in matric this year, which would allow them access to Microsoft educational programmes from a database.

A further 928 schools will receive CDs, featuring the curriculum and allowing them the use of ICT too.

The department is aiming for a 70% pass rate this year.

“To add to that, 542 schools will be receiving tablets as well,” Ngonzo said.

“We call this the programme of action to achieve the learning outcomes. We launched this programme in the third quarter of 2013 but this year we are launching it in the second quarter.”

According to Makupula, the department will also provide a number of other support programmes which include:

  • The distribution of 80000 study guides and study tips material which have been distributed to all schools;
  • Saturday contact classes aimed at 411 schools which attained a matric pass mark of 60% and below last year;
  • Winter and spring schools in all 23 districts for revision and preparations for final exams; and
  • A mentoring and coaching programme that is currently being rolled out in all three clusters of the province to support principals of underperforming schools.

Makupula added that the focus of the support programmes would be on the eight districts which only managed to achieve a pass rate of between 50% and 60% last year.

These include Grahamstown, Fort Beaufort, Sterkspruit, Qumbu, Mount Frere, Butterworth, Idutywa, Mbizana, Libode and Lusikisiki.

“The department has give the project high-priority status, with a project manager to support implementation, monitoring and evaluation,” Makupula said.

“We call for support from all our communities to ensure that this programme is a resounding success.” — zisandan@dispatch.co.za
