Epic ocean paddle for young adventurers

A FORMER Rhodes University rower and six mates are hoping to paddle their way into the record books by crossing the Indian Ocean from Australia to Durban in a rowing boat.

After years of embarking on epic adventures to raise money for local charities, Cameron Bellamy left yesterday on his toughest

The epic row covers one of the most remote oceans of the world and passes in the same area where the search for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 has been conducted. Over the years Leven has rowed four oceans – taking 123 days on his longest trip – but has never attempted one this far.

An avid rower, Bellamy attended Rhodes a decade ago and represented South Africa at the U23 World Rowing Championships in 2003 and the World University Rowing Championships in 2004.

Since graduating, he has cycled solo across China, Central Asia and India before setting up the Ubunye Challenge – a fundraising initiative that features Bellamy and and others attempting extreme endurance feats to raise money for schools in rural Southern Africa.

He has cycled the UK from Lands End to John O’Groats, swum the English Channel solo and completed a global 24-hour row which involved 400 rowers from five continents; breaking five world records in the process.

To date his Ubunye Challenge has raised R700 000. — davidm@dispatch.co.za
