Pupils do their bit for Heritage

SIYAVUYA Senior Primary School in Mdantsane celebrated Heritage Day with traditional dance and music yesterday.

Teacher Ntombebhongo Gedze, said the celebrations were not just about having fun but were meant to be educational as well.

Grade 5 pupil Sesethy Ndlela said she had learnt a lot about the steps required to become a traditional healer.

Grade 6 pupil Lihle Lolo played the role of a mother in the umeluko routine and said: “I know now how I will be expected to act when my son goes through the passage into manhood and I will know what to provide for him. We thank our teachers for teaching us these things.”

Parent Vuyiswa Mcosana said events like this were vital in a child’s upbringing.

“We cannot just teach them how to read and write. In the meantime they have no idea where they come from and who exactly they are.

“Knowledge of heritage is as important as learning how to be a doctor,” said Mcosana. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
