Curvy model excels at pageant

East London model Desi Cornelius was crowned first runner-up at this year’s Miss Curvaceous pageant in Johannesburg on the weekend. It was her first pageant, and beauty, 24, said taking part in Miss Curvaceous was “like a dream”.  It took place on Saturday at the Empire Hotel in Sandton.

“I had fun on that stage. To have made it this far was a bonus to me. It’s confirmation that I am on the right path. I felt so honoured to be the first runner-up,” she said.

Miss Curvaceous is hosted by Johannesburg-based modeling agency C Square Models and Promotion Agency. The pageant incorporates fashion and design in an entertaining showcase for all age groups.

“The reception was amazing. Everyone was just cheering for us and I did not feel like an outsider. We were all celebrated,” she said.

The Miss Curvaceous top 10 finalists competed in categories of casual wear, swim wear, a talent show, evening wear and traditional wear.

“We had to wear our swim wear and show off our bodies and dimples. I felt beautiful and proud of my body. It was very lovely,” she said.

The finalists had to bring their own swim wear and denim shorts, while C Square provided all the other outfits for the finalists.

C Square co-founder Richard Femi Jegede said they were pleased with the event. “The turnout this year was amazing. People came in numbers to support,” he said.

Jegede said some of their future plans include having a Miss Curvaceous Day.

“We don’t only want to celebrate the women who enter the pageant, we want every South African woman to know she is beautiful and does not need to drop weight in order to be appreciated,” he said.

Cornelius said she had wanted to win the competition but was not discouraged by her loss.

“The judges said it was a close one between myself and the girl who won. I really wanted to win, but I am still pleased that I made it to the top three, especially considering that it was the first time that I competed,” she said.

The competition was won by 24-year-old Herriet Hita, who received a one-year study bursary and a clothing voucher.

Cornelius is now signed under C Square and although she did not win first place, she said she was looking forward to entering more curvaceous pageants.

“I felt so much peace and joy while modelling. This is something that I want to do for the next couple of years.” — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
