The so-called “poo protesters” hit Buffalo City Metro yesterday when a group of angry Amalinda Forest residents dumped human faeces from their community toilet at the offices of their ward councillor.
Police were called to calm down the group of more than 60 residents, who arrived at the Amalinda offices of Ward 16 ANC councillor Monwabisi Mahodi armed with three buckets of faeces.
Residents walked a distance of 2km carrying the poo which they then dumped in Mahodi's workplace and left.
Cambridge police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said the residents’ behaviour was inhumane.
“It is disrespectful and uncalled for. In issues of service delivery there are always proper channels that dissatisfied residents can follow,” he said, adding that no one was arrested as no complaint was laid.
Resident Noah Mkhungqwana said the allocated municipal toilets were blocked, and they overflowed on Sunday.
They reported the blockage to their ward committee structure, which he accused of delaying in fixing the problem.
Another resident, Mthetheleli Ntshonga, said sewage was spilling into his shack.
“It becomes worse when it is raining. There was a municipal bakkie early today .
“But the guys told us that they couldn’t fix the toilet’s burst pipes as they only deal with underground lines,” he said.
Ward committee member Jackson Kelewu accused the disgruntled group of being members of the Economic Freedon Fighters (EFF).
“This thing is not about service delivery, it is political.
“I am the one who called the municipality to organise the sewerage system to be fixed and it is going to be fixed,” he said.
“We keep on warning residents to stop throwing nappies and sanitary pads into those toilets because these items cause blockages,” he said.
