Laughter was the order of the day at the Steve Biko Centre on Saturday night as local comedians had the audience in stitches during the Tsepiso and Friends Comedy Night show.
A first for the centre, the comedy show was hosted by Mdantsane-born comedian Mbulelo “Manylaughs” Msongelwa and Beat Magazine’s headline comedian of the year, Tsepiso Ndzayo.
Other comedians who performed were Hleka nathi comedians – Sibusiso Zatu, Luphelo Kodwa, Siyabulela Seya and Zikhona Zatu – who all gave outstanding performances.
“Manylaughs” lived up to his stage name and had the audience laughing from the word go, making jokes about Port Elizabeth where he currently lives.
“Most people in PE are called Mabheka. Everywhere you go in PE there is a Mabheka; they probably even pray to Mabheka in PE,” said Msongelwa, as he proceeded to imitate a prayer from Port Elizabeth. “In the name of the Father, the son and…” the audience all chipped in and screamed “Mabheka” before loud laughter erupted.
Zatu then took to the stage, telling the audience about his dreams of being adopted by business tycoon Patrice Motsepe, followed by Ndevana-born Kodwa, whose entrance song was a popular Nigerian song.
He went on to say he had a new-found love for Nigerian songs because the “majority of our Xhosa sisters are dating Nigerians these days”.
He said he had to learn their language somehow, just in case one of his sisters brought a Nigerian man home.
If that were to happen though, he noted with caution, he’d never defend his sister if she got into a fight with her “bulky” Nigerian boyfriend because “those guys don’t say ‘I’ll beat you up’, no. ‘Ah, I will eliminate you oh! I will kill you twice, you will die today and you will die tomorrow’,” said Kodwa to much laughter.
Ndzayo took a jab at ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, pointing out his name could be mistaken for a traditional Xhosa remedy of some sort.
Widow of struggle hero Steve Biko, Mama Ntsiki Biko, was among those who enjoyed the night and said it was a good way to de-stress.
She encouraged comedians to carry on with their profession as they were all “very talented”.
The Steve Biko Foundation’s head of arts and culture Jongi Hoza said they would definitely host another comedy night soon.
“The comedy nights are suitable for everyone in the family and make for an awesome family experience,” Hoza said.
The centre collaborated with Hleka nathi to host the comedy night.
