Boxing Day gospel treat

East London gospel lovers are in for a treat as several winners of the Crown Gospel Music Awards – and a number of nominees – will grace the city on Friday next week for a gospel festival.

The show is the brainchild of Vovee Entertainment.

East London gospel singer Sivuyile  Batala, of Vovee Entertainment, said the festival will feature guest speakers Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule and Zanele Mbokazi,  founders of the awards.

Featured artists will be song of the year winner Betusile Mcinga; best gospel classic winner Dumi Mkokstad; well-known East London  singer Malibongwe Gcwabe; best traditional gospel award winner Veliswa Skeyi; and gospel group Chosen, who walked away with the  best newcomer and best producer awards, among others.

Other well-known faces will include M-Siya, host of the TV show According to the Bible, and Christian comedian TD Jokes. Music producer and artist Soso Maholwana will be the MC.

Batala said people from all religious denominations are invited to attend the festival.

“The purpose of the festival is not only to celebrate Christianity but mostly to celebrate the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ.  As such, we call on all congregations to come and join us to celebrate this day,” Batala said.

“We understand that some people don’t believe that Jesus Christ was born on December 25.  As a result, we are not focusing on the particular day but rather  celebrating his birth and his existence through music.”

According to Batala, this will be the fourth event of its kind to be held in the province, with many more in the pipeline.

“We love to celebrate gospel music in the province.  The Eastern Cape is the leading province when it comes to gospel music. It truly is the home of gospel.

“Just look at how many successful gospel artists who won at the Crown Gospel Awards are from East London,” he said.

lThe event will be held at the Orient Theatre on December 26. Tickets are available at Music Mix at R100, or at the door at R150.
