Three hats in DA federal chair ring

The stakes are high for the Democratic Alliance’s federal chairman position, which becomes vacant this weekend as incumbent Wilmot James launches his campaign for control of the party.

There are three names in the federal chair hat – Athol Trollip, Masizole Mnqasela and Makashule Gana. Daily Dispatch reporters Zine George and Siphe Macanda spoke to the three candidates about their promises and plans.

CURRENT POSITION: DA federal deputy chairman

AS THE DA leadership race heats up and the national congress looms, Gana is confident he will win the hearts of DA members.

Yesterday he said the position needed an activist.

“An important thing that DA members must expect from me is that I’m going to be an activist chairperson. I’m going to focus on the task of chairperson because I dislike holding many different positions.

“I’m going to make sure that policy discussions happen at branch and constituency levels, and that our lower structures have a bigger say in the policy direction of the organisation.”

Gana, the father of a five-year-old girl, said with him at the helm, the DA would have formalised leadership development to ensure the party grew leaders. “When we win municipalities and provinces and when we get to the Union Buildings, we must have enough leaders. Not just in numbers but leaders of quality who are grounded in the realities of our country.”

Gana said his support was dominant across the country, and his strongholds were Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State and North West. “I command support across the country, and in most of the provinces I have spoken with delegates. I have done a lot of communication with delegates, I have called them personally and I do have people assisting me.” — siphem@dispatch.co.za
