Third suspect nabbed for Port Alfred robbery

A third man allegedly linked to a recent armed robbery of cash-in-transit guards at a Port Alfred shopping appeared briefly in a local court on Monday.

The 38 year-old was arrested in Port Elizabeth over the weekend by East London organised crime detectives who allegedly found him in possession of an undisclosed amount of money and other property taken during the robbery.

The case was postponed by magistrate Walter le Grange until Thursday when he and his two co-accused will appear in court together on armed robbery charges.

His co-accused‚ aged 35 and 25‚ were arrested in Port Alfred shortly after two G4s cash-in-transit guards were overpowered and robbed while loading money into a mall ATM.

Local police spokesman Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said the guards were tied up and robbed of cellphones‚ keys and an undisclosed amount of money by four men .

The men allegedly loaded the money into a waiting car which sped off with the the G4s driver in pursuit.

The four men fled on foot into nearby bushes‚ taking pot shots at passing motorists on the R72.
