Sports minister Fikile Mbalula reminds Congress of the People (Cope) spokesperson Dennis Bloem of the Shakespearean Queen Gertrude.

Bloem said that Cope doesn’t “understand why the minister so recklessly addressed the media himself” and Mbalula’s denials called to mind the immortal line delivered by Hamlet’s mother: “the lady doth protest too much”.

“He too‚ indeed‚ is protesting too much much and that gives us an inkling that he has something to hide‚” Bloem added.

He pointed out that Mbalula was not the sports minister during the World Cup bid and “is therefore acting on hearsay information”.

“He should have asked people who were directly involved in the bid to join him at the front table to answer the questions posed by journalists‚” said Bloem‚ referring to the absence of Danny Jordaan and Molefi Oliphant at Wednesday’s press conference about allegations of bribery and corruption surrounding the 2010 World Cup.

“Cope urges Mbalula to shut his mouth and save the country further embarrassment. The more he talks and denies the involvement of South Africa in the allegations of bribery and corruption‚ the more information is coming to the fore‚” said Bloem.

He said the surprise resignation of Fifa head Sepp Blatter this week showed “that a lot of information is still going to come out”.
