Eastern Cape a cappella group Legato hit all the right notes and made it to the top four of a national talent search competition, The Sing Off SA.

The talent competition is in its first year and airs on SABC1 every Sunday at 6pm. The winners will walk away with prize money of R250000 and a recording contract.

The show is a local version of the popular American reality TV show The Sing Off.

The South African show is judged by popular musicians Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground, house musician and producer Zakes Bantwini and rapper Hip-Hop Pantsula.

The other groups who make up the top four include Solid from Cape Town, The Legacy from Durban and Question Mark from Johannesburg.

Legato band leader Milani Sixakiwe said they did not expect to be make it through to nationals when they auditioned in March this year.

“We were just trying our luck. When we did not get a call back immediately, we forgot about the competition.

“It was only a month after that we received a call back,” Sixakiwe said.

Other band members include Phiwokuhle Tyatya, Lwando Lukuko, Luyolo Stungu and Unathi Nhlabati.

Sixakiwe said they have had to adapt to various music genres over the past couple of weeks.

“Coming from a church background, we had to adapt to secular music and we also had to learn choreography. Normally, we would just perform and not focus on choreography and engaging with the crowd but now we’ve worked on that,” Sixakiwe said.

Music director Relebogile Mabotja said the show has re-lit the a cappella flame.

“The competition has been tough, emotional and challenging for all contestants pushing them to their highest potential to give us the best of best,” she said.

Sixakiwe said with the support of the public and prayers they were confident they would make it to the top three this Sunday. Even if we do not win the competition, we would like to pursue a career in music.

“This is something we love to do and we will be able to apply everything we learned during the competition,” he said.

The battle for the top three this Sunday will be fought under the hip-hop/motswako theme, with HHP creating the right atmosphere with his opening performance.
