After receiving scores of nominations for the Daily Dispatch Johnson & Johnson Local Hero, the top 12 candidates have been selected for the 2015 Local Heroes Awards Ceremony on November 25.

About 40 local heroes around the Eastern Cape were interviewed by the Daily Dispatch from January this year. Nominations closed on October 16.

Daily Dispatch reporters visited communities and people where each of the heroes made a positive and hopeful impact on the community.

Among the panel of judges to select the top 12 were Johnson & Johnson’s Michelle Williams, Daily Dispatch editor-in-chief Bongani Siqoko, Daily Dispatch marketing manager Suren Packery, MEC of rural development and agrarian reform, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, and Dr Lesley Ann Foster, director of Masimanyane women’s support centre.

Siqoko said: “I urge our readers to find time to read these stories as they will inspire them and move all of us to do something.”

The Top 12 will be announced to the public at the event, although they will be notified by the Daily Dispatch marketing department this week.

BCM senior accountant Akhona Matyobeni, who gives accounting lessons to matric pupils at Kusile Comprehensive School in Duncan Village, was nominated as a hero this year.

“Because of the plight of poverty in Duncan Village and minimal NSFAS funding, not all learners will end up at varsity,” said Matyobeni.

“But what would make me happy is for some of my learners to at least receive a registration fee, which will kick-start their university life.”

The Local Heroes Awards Ceremony 2015 will take place at The Venue@Hemingways on November 25 at 6pm. The evening will be facilitated by Bongani Bingwa from Carte Blanche.

The public are encouraged to buy tables for the event, especially corporate companies with the potential to invest in the local heroes. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
