Giving poor kids a chance in life

After overcoming the challenge of growing up in one of the poorest townships in the country and attending poorly resourced schools, two former Duncan Village pupils decided to change the future of hundreds of pupils facing the same fate.

Founded in June last year, the organisation hosts daily sessions with help from eight University of Fort Hare student tutors.

Classes are held in two different venues, with the pupils separated by grades. All subjects are covered, including languages and business studies.

One of the two founders, Sikholwethu Msutwana, said after seeing and experiencing first-hand the many social ills affecting young people in the area he had been inspired to act.

“When we were at school we had many issues to deal with. There was a really high dropout rate and we had to deal with issues such as crime, drugs and teenage pregnancy. Poverty also hit some children hard.
