Residents of the DJ Sobey Old Age Home in Buffalo Flats were treated to a surprise yesterday when they received sleepwear from a women’s church group.
The Vukani Senior Citizens Touring Club, a group of pensioners from the Methodist Church in Amalinda, donated nighties and pyjamas which they made themselves.
The group’s treasurer Thobeka Maliwa said they had adopted the home in 2010 and had over the years provided residents with essentials such as scarves, jerseys, beanies and blankets and even toiletries.
“When we retired we wanted to use the time we suddenly found ourselves with to make a positive contribution to our communities. We chose to adopt the home because we know that some of them do not have any more relatives and have no one to care for them besides the caregivers here.
“We wanted to do something for them that would remind them that they are not alone and have not been forgotten,” said Maliwa.
The home houses frail and elderly people from disadvantaged communities.
Maliwa said they were proud of their efforts and hoped to continue helping and inspire others to do the same.
“We also gain from this exercise because on the one hand we give hope to the people here but this gives us life and vitality because it keeps us busy.
“But the main reason for doing this is to show that one can make a difference regardless of their age,” she said.
DJ Sobey matron Abigail Oliphant said it was admirable that the elderly group were able to care for other senior citizens and set an example to others.
Resident Silumko Mganxela said he appreciated the attention and gifts because he felt cared for.
