Soapies rule on television

Soap operas continue to rule the airwaves in South Africa, as they remain the most-watched genre on South African television.

And this is in keeping with the local is lekker theme as home grown productions lead the pack.

The latest Television Audience Measurement Survey (Tams) figures by the Broadcast Research Council (BRC) show that soapies are the shows, on average, bringing in the most adult viewership on South Africa’s TV channels during primetime (6pm-11pm).

The most-watched soapie is SABC1’s telenovela Uzalo that draws a whopping 7.7million viewers daily. Coming in a close second, with nearly seven million viewers is Generations. SABC2’s Muvhango is in third place.

The Bold and the Beautiful is SABC3’s top show with just over 1 million viewers with free-to-air television channel e.tv’s Scandal bringing in 3.9million viewers.

Reality TV show Our Perfect Wedding (OPW) is Mzansi Magic’s most-watched show with 1.1million viewers.

While OPW is king on its channel, it ranks fourth out of five places with regards to top reality shows, as SABC1’s Nyan Nyan’ almost doubles its viewership with 2.25million viewers.

The Tams panel provides television viewing information, via measurement tools that are designed to measure viewing habits.

In a sample household, each family member is given a personal viewing button.

The “peoplemeter” measuring tool – a box hooked up to a TV set – will even flash to remind a user that the TV is on and even if they have not identified themselves.

The results are reported weekly and published on the BRC website. The latest figures relate to the week of November 9-15.
