The ANC has assigned two of its top leaders, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa and secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, to launch the party’s election campaign in two Eastern Cape regions this week.

Mantashe will be in Mount Ayliff today addressing more than 3000 Alfred Nzo election volunteers, while Ramaphosa is scheduled to address thousands more in Mthatha’s OR Tambo region on Sunday as the party gears up for the 2016 local government elections.

Mantashe confirmed to the Daily Dispatch yesterday that he would be hard at work in Alfred Nzo today, “as part of my ANC work. Thousands will be there to witness the launch of our election campaign in that region,” he said.

The party encourages its members to volunteer their services to rally support for the party in every street throughout the country.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said the volunteers were tasked to knock on each and every door “to spread the gospel of why it is important to vote, and why people should be renewing the ANC’s mandate to lead”.

“Once the SG and deputy president are done with addressing the crowds, they will continue and interact with them on the ground to get a sense of the challenges they are faced with when busy with the door-to-door campaigns,” said Mabuyane.

The regional election rallies in the province kicked off in Amathole last month where the party deployed its national executive committee member, Nomvula Mokonyane.

The event saw more than 5000 ANC volunteers being taken through what is expected of them.

OR Tambo is the ANC’s second-biggest region in the country, and biggest in the province

Ramaphosa’s visit to Mthatha comes while the region is faced with huge challenges of factional fights.

A group of disgruntled OR Tambo ANC members have officially lodged disputes in Luthuli House, the ANC headquarters, over outcomes of the October elective regional conference.

The Dispatch reported yesterday that NEC deployees to OR Tambo, Joe Gqabi and Buffalo City Metro have been assigned to come to the regions and investigate the allegations of membership rigging.

Mabuyane said the NEC investigations would not affect the party’s provincial election programme.
