R15m project set to empower youth

Hundreds of young villagers from the Eastern Cape will benefit from a R15-million project to acquire various skills.

The project is in partnership with the department of rural development and agrarian reform and the services sector education and training authority (Seta), which has funded the programme.

Earlier this year bursaries from the health and welfare Seta were received by students from Tsolo Agriculture College.

MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the programme aimed to ensure equal access to development opportunities.

“Unemployment statistics for the Eastern Cape stand at 27.8% and 43.5% .

“The situation is worse still in the economically depressed rural regions,” he said.

“The various programmes seek to improve the ability of young people to obtain gainful employment, ownership of enterprises and assets that will provide the economic basis for human development through learnerships and internships.” Qoboshiyane said his department welcomed the grant from Seta.

“It will go a long way in developing youth from rural areas, particularly in order to create a better life for those residing in rural villages as part of our rural development.” The training targets 131 unemployed young graduates drafted into a 12-month internship programme placed in the department’s supply chain, finance and asset management divisions at the district offices and head office in Bhisho.

Meanwhile, a further 285 unemployed people will be recruited for learnership programmes from Joe Gqabi, Chris Hani and Amathole district municipalities where they will be trained in community development, with a focus on dipping services.

About 85 will be trained in hygiene and cleaning services. “The intention of this programme is to expose these unemployed graduates to real work environment by developing their skills,” said Qoboshiyane.

About 115 youths participating in the dipping programme will obtain NQF level 5 qualifications in community development.

Qoboshiyane said the hygiene and cleaning services learnership trainees would be placed in various establishments within the hospitality industry in the three district municipalities and obtain NQF level 2 qualifications.
