Public transport provider Mayibuye Transport Corporation has 30 new buses.

The new fleet was unveiled at the firm’s Zwelitsha depot yesterday, with an additional 20 due to arrive later this month.

Once all the buses, valued at R44-million, have arrived, MTC will boast a total fleet of 105.

In April it purchased five new standard buses worth R9.5-million to replace old, unroadworthy vehicles that had been scrapped after more than 17 years.

In September, three semi-luxury buses worth R8-million were added, particularly to launch their Park and Ride system, which allows commuters travelling between Bhisho and Beacon Bay to leave their vehicles at Spargs mall.

Premier Phumulo Masualle, who was one of the dignitaries at the bus launch yesterday, said at times he took the bus to work.

“The buses are efficient, smart and comfortable.

“The government has invested millions to provide buses to restore the dignity of the people who utilise the service and to transport people to places of socioeconomic growth and health facilities.”

Other dignitaries who attended the event yesterday were transport MEC Weziwe Tikana, BCM mayor Alfred Mtsi, MTC board chairman Vanguard Mkosana and CEO Ntombizine Madyibi.

Mkosana said it was the first time 30 buses had been bought at the same time, although they were still awaiting another 20 due by the end of the year.

“It is a momentous time for the corporation because by the end of the year, we will have 105 operational buses.”

Madyibi said the new buses would help restore routes that had been closed for lack of buses.

“Although we have not yet launched the routes to Aliwal North we have restored routes to Alice and Queenstown.

“Now they will all be covered.”

Madyibi said the new buses were 75-seaters.

The eight semi-luxury vehicles have screens and wifi.

Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana said the state had spent more than R60-million procuring the buses, and that it was an investment that positioned Mayibuye to become “the public transporter of choice” in the eastern half of the Eastern Cape. — mballit@dispatch.co.za
